Rauris primeval forest

Untouched forests such as the Rauris primeval forest with its peat pools, old pointed spruce, fallen trees and clearings are a rarity. 80 ponds, lakes and marshes dot the landscape of the ancient landslide forest in the "Rauris primeval forest". It is thanks to these unusual occurrences at 1,600 metres above sea level that the vegetation on the only upland moor in the Alps has evolved accordingly. Hikers can witness an exceptionally unique flora and fauna rich in species, many of which are protected, on their way through the Rauris primeval forest.

  • Trail description:

A themed trail was built here in order to protect nature in its untouched form. Starting from the Lenzanger car park, the trail takes you past numerous peat mosses and cyperaceae. A small forest museum provides information about the geological formation of this area as well as about the local fauna and flora. You normally need 45 minutes to walk through the Rauris primeval forest. However, if you take more time you will be able to experience this impressive nature at your own pace and recover on this mystical moor and gain a sense of this natural phenomenon.
